Lessons I Learned From My Cat

  • When it is time to play, play. Even if that means taking a break from writing, working with clients, teleconferencing or whatever else you are doing. Better yet, play WHILE working.
  • Personal interaction is more rewarding than screen time. Paw at your companion’s phone until they agree.
  • When it is time to stretch, stretch BIG. No small measures. Stretch every part of your body, and the mind and spirit will stretch too.
  • Eat only when you are hungry. Unlike my dog, the cat eats until she is full and then walks away with food left in the bowl. She was young and feral when I got her, and was food aggressive, trying to grab whatever we were eating. Now she trusts that there will be enough.
  • Trust that there will be enough.
  • Love and let yourself be loved.
  • Get up and listen to the birds sing. (Don’t eat the birds).
  • Comfort those who are sad. I’m a therapist. She is a natural therapy animal, curling up in a client’s lap when they are anxious or sad.
  • Invite others to play with you. Persist. (Old dogs can learn new tricks).
  • Let yourself be petted. Purr.
  • Climb higher. Even indoors.
  • Act as if you own EVERYTHING. Own nothing.
  • Have diverse friends. (See previous reference to the old dog).
  • Expect nothing and be ready for anything.
  • Find a surprise around every corner and behind every door.
  • Clean yourself regularly.
  • Fully relax.
  • Sleep deeply and well.
  • Cuddle to keep warm.
  • Know and embrace your purpose.
  • Do it all with mischievous eyes and a calm facade.
  • Let the calm be more than a facade.
  • Let the Universe know you want to be adopted. Reach out with your paw to the lady who just left Happy Hour to buy dog food.
