I met John Howard Griffin when I was in college, after reading his book as a preteen. I lived in an all white town, so his experience was an epiphany for me. I vividly remember parts of the book still. When I met him he wouldn’t talk about the book. He wanted Black voices to be centered. Not long after, he died from complications of the medication he took to darken his skin, and the beating that damaged his kidneys.
