I don’t know how to send the link to my story, “How to Raise a Young Black Man in America…When You Are White.” We dealt with reclaiming “the word” when he was in Middle School, even though, because of me, we never used it in our home. But I wanted him to understand why other Black people did. When he spoke truth to power about it, his Black principle and half-Black teacher did not understand the concept. I had to explain to them my purpose in teaching it to him, and more in depth to him why older Black and White People would always feel negatively about that word.
