#Enough Really Is Enough
I started my blog as a way to treat serious subjects ironically, sarcastically, or with other types of humor. I planned to comment mostly on current issues, and to insert sanity and good sense among the silliness, or vice versa.
And then there was the Parkland shooting. There is no humor to be found here. I could certainly use sarcasm and irony to make fun of gun advocates, the NRA, and uncaring, inactive politicians. I even had most of that blog written in my head. And while that might temporarily make me feel better, that ship has sailed.
This topic must be taken as seriously as the surviving Parkland students and other students around the country are taking it. We must march with them and support them with our votes and messages to congress.
We must remind congress that these students can vote in one year, two years, three years, and some this year at age 18. We must remind the NRA that #Enough is enough.
I worked for a time as a counselor in my son’s school. I talked down a father in front of our school with a handgun waiting for his ex wife to arrive to pick up their kids. We were alerted by a parent that he had pulled out a gun, then hidden it back in his jacket pocket. Fortunately for me and others, he kept it there as I approached him to talk him down. It was not the most intelligent decision I ever made, nor did I feel heroic or even brave. I was both angry and terrified. It was a year before Columbine, and all we knew about school shootings was that there was a guy at our school with a gun, and the police were taking a very long time to respond. Today there are drills, police cars and patrols on campus, and as much protocol as is possible when dealing with a determined killer and a semi-automatic. Since our guy wasn’t as determined, nor carrying a semi-automatic, I was able to reason with him until the police arrived.
There is no real moral to my real life story. We were fortunate, and I was able to effectively use my negotiator skills. However, what if it had been a semi-automatic? Would the story have turned out differently?
So I end with what I post and answer back to trolls or “ well meaning” gun owners instead of arguing. NO ONE NEEDS A SEMI-AUTOMATIC EXCEPT SOLDIERS.
