Despite this, my doctor says it is very unlikely that I could naturally conceive and carry a baby. Do you want to know how I felt?

Don’t listen to that Doctor. If there’s an egg you can conceive. I was 49 when my doctor told me I was still fertile. The 36 year old I was dating and I got a lot more careful after that!
