Communion began with Jesus breaking the leaven free bread and drinking the wine of Passover, both representing the Jewish Passover. Unleavened bread represented manna from Heaven provided during the wandering in the desert looking for the promised land. The wine represented the blood Jewish inhabitants of Egypt used to draw on their doors so the Angel of Death would Pass Over. In that respect, they have power as symbolism. On the other hand it could be argued that Jesus was saying to remember him every time his followers break bread and drink anything with a meal. Or he might have been teaching his disciples, who were Jewish, to remember him every passover. That makes the most sense because an empty chair is left at Passover tables for Elijah, who will show up to announce the Messiah. Jesus may have been saying to remember him as the Messiah at every Passover meal, which is celebrated once a year. None of these interpretations of the ritual says anything about crackers and grape juice served in most church communions, much less fig newtons and Coca-cola, unless we’re applying it to remembering Jesus at every meal.
