As a therapist, I see a lot of irrational emotional responses to compliments that arise from low self esteem in men and women. As a woman, I clearly see the difference in a compliment and admiration versus harassment. As a feminist, I abhor harassment, but I want to be admired for my femininity and the work I put in to keep a healthy body. We are hard wired as a species to notice and be attracted to healthy, strong bodies, so as to propagate the species. (Check out my Medium blog “So It’s Time To Write About Sex Agin Because…) I hope, soon, we will define the difference in harassment and genuine admiration. And, as to your question about whether heterosexual women admire the male physique as we watch sports? Hell yeah.

I am equally sure gay men admire those same athletes’ bodies, and lesbian women admire female athletes bodies. and frankly, I also admire strong female bodies, even as I acknowledge, and encourage in my clients, the right of every woman to rejoice in her body whether it is “perfect” or not.
