And They Sing, Oh Ain’t You Glad You’re Single
“And that song ain’t so very far from wrong.” — Joseph J. Lilley and Frank Loesser
As kids we sang this song about the joys of being single. It’s a catchy tune. Google it if you don’t know it, and I guarantee you’ll be singing along with spurs that “go jingle, jangle, jingle,” in no time. You’re welcome.
Why did I sing this growing up, apart from the fact that I heard it on a Popeye cartoon? Surely, as a kid, I didn’t really understand about being single versus partnered. As a kid, of course I was single.
Maybe, as that particular kid, I was already tired of being told what to do and not do, and didn’t want to grow up and be with yet one more person who felt entitled to do so. I can be a tad strong headed. Let’s go with that.
We should ignore the fact that the song is always sung by a man, and the lyrics include several women he courts and leaves:
“Oh Mary Ann, Oh Mary Ann, though I did some moonlight walking, this is why I up and ran.”
“Oh Bessy Lou, oh, Bessy Lou, though we’ve done a lot of dreamin’ this is why it won’t come true.”
Or maybe I’ll just bring that up with my therapist.
